Who Does Oregon City DBT Help?

DBT( Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) helps people with big emotions, and sometimes big reactions, to cultivate peace in this not always sensitive world we live in. In my 20 years in the field of psychology, I have seen DBT transform lives.

One of the first and most challenging lessons in DBT is teaching clients how to accept the inevitable suffering that is part of the human experience.  Only by accepting our reality are we able to learn to cope more effectively with that which we cannot change.  Where does one learn these life lessons?  Some people are fortunate enough to learn these golden nuggets of wisdom from valued role models or parents, but the rest of us need to learn new skills and try harder to create our own version of a wonderful life.

DBT skills groups have provided healing to a wide variety of my clients with symptoms ranging from anxiety to depression, to PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) as well as CPTSD (complex post-traumatic stress disorder).  It provides skills in emotion regulation by utilizing the ancient teachings of mindfulness.   Mindfulness has a way of permeating all aspects of one’s life by teaching us that thoughts are just thoughts and not facts.  Core mindfulness skills are at the foundation of all DBT learning.  Some of the other skills taught in DBT include coping with painful emotions, artfully managing relationship conflict, improving self-compassion and increasing self-esteem through ultimately: learning to love and accept the self.  Without self-love, one is not able to sustain healthy relationships, whether it be with a partner, friends, or co-workers. Relationships are transformed by practicing DBT skills.

About Our Location

Though based out of West Linn, Oregon, our clients come from surrounding communities that Portland is just a little too far a commute for. These communities include West Linn, Canby, Molalla, Clackamas, Lake Oswego, and SE Portland. As a resident of Oregon City, Mimi wanted to bring these skills to her community when she took her private practice full time in 2018 so they could be accessible to her cherished clients.

DBT was originally developed by Marsha Linnehan, Ph.D., from the University of Washington in Seattle. DBT can be used to treat a wide variety of problems, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse and emotional regulation challenges in relationships. Research studies comparing DBT to standard cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or to psychodynamic therapy have shown DBT to be more effective. Clients who undergo DBT get better faster and retain gains made.

Simply put, DBT teaches people how to live well. It doesn’t matter the diagnosis, or even if there is no diagnosis. If one has a model of strategies and skills to deal effectively with the inevitable stress that is part of the human experience, one is better equipped to manage their life more effectively. DBT teaches us how to create “a life worth living."
